A report by the Intergovernmental Platform on Science and Policy on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) highlights the very real threat to biodiversity on our planet, showing the devastation caused by human activity. More than one million species face extinction, one in four, which as well as being a crime in itself, spells doom for the survival of humans.
The constant growth demanded by capitalism is unsustainable and requires immediate action. A system without any effective supranational supervision, whereby companies and countries compete with each other to grow faster and faster by exploiting all the resources at their disposal. Intergovernmental panels such as the IPCC or IPBES can spell out the problems but are toothless when it comes to demanding effective measures to halt the process.
The consequences of our unsustainable economy are obvious: overexploitation, loss of habitat, pollution and climate change are some of the effects of a system that is rapidly depleting the world’s resources. For the first time in history, humanity faces its own demise, but instead of acknowledging this and taking urgent corrective measures, we prefer to deny it or look for alternative explanations.
Fishing on a scale that threatens to wipe out entire species, deforestation, populist such as Jair Bolsonaro or Mike Pompeo who have no problem with razing the Amazon or who say that the loss of Arctic ice is an opportunity for trade… we are in the midst of a full-scale emergency caused by our activities, we are a devastating plague that us bringing about the end of the planet at unprecedented speed, although this is barely reflected in the news, which prefers to tug at our heart strings with images of starving polar bears, as if the threat were something romantic and that they will only survive in zoos. This is about much more than polar bears or sea turtles disappearing: the threat is the loss of balance, an absolutely necessary balance, essential for the survival of the human species itself.
So please don’t just think “oh, another alarming report”, or “what a drag this Enrique is, going on about this all the time.” Please click on the links, read, get informed, find out what is really going on. This article is written to organize links so as to help my readers understand what is happening. This is not a theory or a hypothesis anymore, but pure science that admits no discussion. We have moved beyond the threat to our children or grandchildren; we face collapse in our lifetime.
But don’t take my word for it: dig deeper and look for more information. The situation is much, much more serious than we could ever imagine, and it is happening now: not in a few decades, but now. The planet is heating up more rapidly than at any time in human history, while one four species disappears while we look the other way and pretend we can continue living in the same way we have always lived.
