Experts of the British NGO, Earthsight, which studies the problem of illegal logging around the world, concerned about the current situation in forestry of Ukraine, namely, the influence of SFA and the delay in the reform of the forest sector.
“We were shocked by the force that has the state forestry Agency in Ukraine. There is very little of what it won’t do to protect their interests, including the dissemination of lies and intimidation of Ukrainian citizens,” the report cited the Lawson, Director of Earthsight.
In Earthsight explained that as a result of a two-year study revealed evidence of widespread corruption in the forest sector of Ukraine. Was documented, as wood was a stream across the border into the EU and kept ending up in the stores of large retailers, including IKEA. It was also revealed that EU legislation, which requires a “negligible risk” of illegality during the import of wood, were not applied properly.
“The situation with the Ukrainian forests are now at a crossroads. In the past decade, efforts at forestry reform to overcome the roots of corruption in Ukraine have repeatedly failed due to resistance from powerful private interests. If the Prime Minister is serious about addressing this problem, he should sign the strategy (relative to the forestry reform, which is waiting on the signature of Prime Minister – ed.) and to provide full political support for its implementation. Our future depends on forests and the forest industry,” added Sam Lawson.
